Thermamax supports unusual student activity

Looking to new horizons with a boat made from concrete

Three students from the DHBW in Mannheim have had success with what at first sight looks a bit eccentric: building a boat made of concrete capable of competing in a regatta. That sort of bravery and crazy behavior appeals to us. The students, all from the Project Engineering faculty, were quickly assured of our interest and support.

Thermamax supported the students with a donation for necessary materials. But the concrete boat is not just for a demonstration, faced with strong competition the team made it to the quarter-finals of the German Canoe-Boat Regatta. In doing so the students proved what can be achieved with a spirit of innovation and unconventional thinking – something that’s also very much part of our company’s philosophy.

But there’s more to the project than just that. The name of the team is ABie in memory of the peace activist Abie Natham and the students linked their technical project with a charity and the message, „If you can float a concrete boat you can get water to the desert!“ They are attracting donations for the charity „Viva con Agua“, which builds wells in Ethiopa. With their innovation and team spirit the three really impressed us.
