Safety should not depend on the age of the engine
The same is true for both older and newer vessels: safety on board is top priority and compliance with safety regulations is essential regardless of the age of the engine. In the engine room, where temperatures are highest, the risk of overheating is at its most intense and reliable fire prevention is vital. As 3D details are often not available for older engines, retrofitting with SOLAS-compliant high-performance insulation systems has only been possible to a limited extent until now.

The solution
With Tmax-Retrofit, older engines can now be efficiently upgraded with high temperature insulation systems which not only meet but also exceed SOLAS standards. The Tmax-Retrofit all-in-one package provides customers with a comprehensive service, from the preparation of the engine’s 3D profile to the thermography of the new developed and installed insulation system. This involves of course needs assessment and, if necessary, cooperation with the engine manufacturer.

1. 3D-Scan

Exhaust and turbocharger insulation must be perfectly fitted in order to be safe and efficient. This can only be achieved with the aid of 3D data of the engine. For this reason, the first step must be to take 3D readings of the engine. The result of this scan serves as the basis for the creation of 3D digital models.  

  

 

  

Reverse Engineering2. Reverse Engineering

On the basis of the 3D data we develop a CAD model of the engine. This is done by converting the STL format polygon net generated by the optical measurements into standard geometries and freeform surfaces. Using the surface models and photographs of the engine we can create a CAD model in STEP or IGES format. When the virtual model is created, we have all the data we need to create a reliable exhaust or turbocharger insulation system.

This is followed by our classic and trusted Thermamax design process. Using the 3D model, our experienced designers develop a durable exhaust and turbocharger insulation, which will keep the maximum surface temperature to below 220º C, or if required, even lower than 100º C. 

Our simulation applications enable us to make this process particularly effective. Using modal analysis, we are able to calculate the vibration response to a virtual component and so to calculate the ideal design before manufacturing the prototype.

4. Manufacture

Following design, the insulation system is then produced. Our vertical integration and technical know-how make it possible to carry this out exclusively at Thermamax. 

First, we create a prototype. All materials and components are subjected to numerous tests in our lab to ensure they are of top quality when put to use. 

Your custom-fit Thermamax exhaust/turbocharger insulation system is now ready and can be fitted.

 5. Installation 

It’s ready! Our specialist technicians fit the exhaust/turbocharger insulation – initially the prototype – to your engine. Now your vessel has a durable insulation system that complies fully with SOLAS standards and – if requested – even exceed them. You can rely on us for fitting and we would also be delighted to provide maintenance for the insulation system.

Lastly, in order to ensure that the new insulation system has the required features, we carry out a full thermography.
